Transportation themed toys are a favorite at our house! Can it zoom, race, or crash? We're sold! Take a peek at my favorite transportation toys for toddlers. These toy trucks, cars, and vehicles are perfect for imaginary play, sensory play, and plain old fun!

The little one at my house loves to GO! Does it have wheels? Can it pull, push, or roll? He’s sold.

As a former teacher, I have pretty high expectations for toys. Yes, I’m a bit of a stickler when it comes to what toys my son plays with. I’ve learned that toys are the key instruments for learning in a young child. It goes to follow that I have a few simple guidelines I follow when I choose toys for my son.

First, toys should be open-ended. This simply means that there is more than one way to play with a toy. Toys that move are always a huge hit in our house. This means that I’m always on the lookout for toddler transportation toys that can be used in open-ended play. Toys like these are key for teaching your child to be more creative. (Psst…if you want the inside scoop on just how to teach creativity read here!)

Second, toys absolutely must be safe! If your little guy is anything like mine, he can be pretty rough as he plays with his cars and trucks. I don’t mind because I know that little boys crave this kind of outlet for their energy. However, it’s essential that our toys can hold up to lots of heavy use. We’ve personally tested every item on this list in our backyard “quality control” department. These transportation toys pass the test!

These transportation toys can keep my little man busy for hours. They aid his cognitive development as he uses them to imagine and create. The toys on this list can boost both gross motor and fine motor skills as well! These are classics, and they’re classics for a reason. If you’re looking for a gift that the little boy in your life will use and love every day, you can’t go wrong with my top picks!

Here’s my top 5 list of go-to toddler transportation themed toys.

1. Radio Flyer WagonInsert Alt Text Here

Why I Love It: Radio Flyer is a classic brand with a lot of history. If you’re searching for a fun alternative to the stroller, look no further! This model boasts two bucket seats with belts, and a detachable awning to keep those little adventurers out of the sun. It’s a little bit of an investment, but you’ll get your money’s worth. Perfect for the park or a walk in your neighborhood!

2. Mega Bloks Ride-On Jeep

Why I Love It: This is a perfect toy to help your little one transition from cruiser to walker to toddler. My son loved pushing his Jeep around as he was first learning to walk. Now that he is a toddler, it works great for imaginary play too! We also love that the seat lifts up to reveal a secret compartment! The Mega Bloks Jeep is super durable and versatile. I promise it will last you well into the toddler years.

3. Melissa & Doug Wooden Stacking Train

Why I Love It: Trains are kind of a big deal around here. Like a HUGE deal. We love this little stackable train puzzle for so many reasons. My little guy is obsessed with anything he can take apart and put back together, so this train gives him those problem solving challenges he loves. 3D puzzles are a fantastic way to get those visual-spatial neurons firing! Another bonus is that this wooden version can handle tons of wear and tear.

4. Green Toys Fire Truck

Why I Love It: Green Toys is a really exciting brand. All their toys are 100% recyclable! This fire truck is solid, versatile, and so much fun. I love that this fire engine doesn’t have all those tiny parts that get lost, but has enough detail to look like the real deal. This is another great option to encourage creative and imaginative play.

5. John Deere Big Scoop Dump Truck

Why I Love It: Let’s face it, toddler love to dump things. Peas, milk, you name it. It’s a force of nature, so why not embrace it? For a toddler, there’s something innately satisfying about filling and dumping. This is the perfect little dump truck for the job! It’s a good size: big enough for a decent load, but not take-over-your-living-room big. Plus, any little farmer will love his own John Deere!
